Upright meaning
A man creeps away from a row of tents carrying five swords awkwardly by the blades, glancing back over his shoulder with a half-smile. Two swords stay stuck in the ground behind him. In the distance soldiers stand around a fire and have noticed nothing at all. He is getting away with it, badly, and he has left behind the two he could not carry. The card is usually read as stealth of the everyday kind: the expense rounded up, the second opinion sought without telling anyone, the plan made privately because a committee would have killed it. It is not always dishonest, and sometimes it is the only way a sensible thing gets done. Upright, it invites you to be honest with yourself about which of those this is, and to remember that the abandoned swords are always what somebody eventually asks about.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the secret does not hold. Often the reading is a confession that arrives before it has to, the thing admitted at the kitchen table on a Sunday, which is nearly always cheaper than the version discovered later by somebody else. It can also mean giving something back: the money, the credit, the story told properly at last. The other side of the card is self-deception, where the person being fooled is the one doing the arithmetic, and a small evasion has been repeated so often that it now stands as the account of record. Reversed, this card invites you to say the awkward part while it is still yours to say.
In love
In love, this card covers the withheld rather than the dramatic: the account not mentioned, the friendship conducted slightly out of sight, the plan for next year that one person has made alone. It rarely points at anything as tidy as betrayal, and more often finds a habit of managing a partner by editing what they are told. Its counsel is that the editing costs far more than the material would have. If you are the one being kept partly in the dark, the tradition suggests one direct question and close attention to the shape of the answer.

At work the Seven of Swords is the card of the shortcut. It covers the process quietly skipped, the supplier used because he is a friend, the figures presented from their most flattering angle, the resignation being planned while you smile through the away day. Some of that is ordinary strategy and some of it is a problem waiting for an audit. The counsel is simple: assume the paperwork will be read one day by somebody unsympathetic.
